Free-agent pitcher options for the Detroit Tigers :

John Smoltz: Only player in history to exceed 200 wins and 150 saves and would be great except for some basic realities: He is coming off shoulder surgery at 41, prefers to start and is hard to imagine leaving Atlanta after 20 seasons.

Trevor Hoffman: All-time career saves leader whose fastball is a few miles per hour faster than his signature changeup.

Brandon Lyon: Had 26 saves last year for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but some see him as a setup man rather than a closer.

David Weathers: Had 33 saves in 2007, but last season he set up closer Francisco Cordero in Cincinnati and could be best suited in that role.

Chad Cordero: Averaged 37.7 saves from 2005-07 but appeared in only six games last year and is questionable for opening day after coming off shoulder surgery.

Eric Gagne: Won the Cy Young Award with 55 saves for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2003, but has 35 saves total over the past four seasons. He has been plagued with injuries, blown saves and was booed out of Boston in 2007.
