Righthander Rob Cordemans, who had a six-week tryout in Taiwan's pro league in 2007, has 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Tom Stuifbergen, whose professional experience consists of 12 1/3 innings at the rookie level with Minnesota, has four scoreless innings. Vanden Hurk, who has a 6.96 ERA for 95 2/3 innings with the Marlins, has 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

The pitching coach knows what he is doing.

Rik Aalbert Blyleven was born in Zeist, Netherlands before coming to America and winning 287 major-league games. Blyleven joined the club as a pitching coach one month ago and has had a significant impact.

Blyleven took an active role in the development of his pitchers, working with their mechanics and their heads. The common denominator to his pitchers is that none has seemed intimidated by the moment. That is a direct reflection of Blyleven's work.

"You can't put a price tag on having Bert in the dugout and the bullpen,'' Delmonico said.

Blyleven ranked the emotional outpouring after the second win over the Dominican as the equal of the World Series-clinching celebrations that he was a part of with Pittsburgh in 1979 and Minnesota in 1987.

"It's an honor for me to wear the Dutch uniform,'' Blyleven said.

He was Dutch before being Dutch was cool.

Surprising Netherlands can play a little bit
MIAMI - The honkballers from the Kingdom of the Netherlands are serious about this Cinderella joyride.

Team Nederlands was the last of four clubs to work out at Dolphin Stadium on Friday in advance on second-round play in the World Baseball — Honkbal in Dutch — Classic. While the others — Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Team USA — came and went in a hurry, Team Orange sandwiched team meetings around a two-hour practice.

"The element of surprise is out the window,'' said righthander Sidney Ponson, who will start for the Dutch Saturday against Venezuela.

Netherlands took care of that by beating the powerful Dominican Republic twice in the first round of the WBC. The wins were a long time coming. The Dutch pattern has been to play well against European competition but falter on the world-wide stage.

"We had a long struggle to develop a good team,'' said first baseman Sharnol Adriana, the team veteran at age 38. "Back in the days, we couldn't compete with the baseball countries. But in the last couple of years, we've been getting better and better and better. This is the pinnacle.''

So who are these guys?

The major-leaguers on the Dominican roster are scheduled to earn about $83 million this season. Only two players on the Dutch roster have a major-league contract for this season: Florida righthander Rick Vanden Hurk and Seattle outfielder Gregory Hallman. Both will be paid at the minimum rate of $400,000 for time spent in the majors.

A few of the Dutch faces are familiar.
