Reds-Brewers Preview 2008-07-13

Reds-Brewers Preview 2008-07-13
With his Milwaukee Brewers' debut behind him, CC Sabathia can relax and focus on the rest of the season.

Sabathia tries to build off his first National League victory when he takes the mound looking to help the Brewers avoid being swept by the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon at Miller Park.

The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner was solid in his Milwaukee debut Tuesday after being traded from Cleveland a day earlier. Sabathia allowed two earned runs with five hits, while walking five and striking out five in six innings of a 7-3 win over Colorado.

Sabathia (1-0, 3.00 ERA), who spent his entire career with the Indians since entering the league in 2001, admits he was nervous in his first start for the Brewers (51-43).

"I had a bunch of emotions going through my head," Sabathia told the Brewers' official Web site. "It got me a little too excited. I was just ready to get to the game, get things going. That was the reason you saw me be so erratic."

On Sunday, the left-hander expects to be more comfortable as he looks to remain perfect against Cincinnati (46-49).

"It will definitely get easier from here," said Milwaukee catcher Jason Kendall of Sabathia, who is 3-0 with a 2.26 ERA in eight starts versus the Reds.

Sabathia allowed four hits and struck out 11 in eight innings of Cleveland's 6-0 win over Cincinnati on June 27 and will try to help the Brewers avoid a third consecutive loss Sunday.

Adam Dunn hit a three-run homer and a solo shot for Cincinnati in Saturday's 8-2 victory. Jerry Hairston Jr. had four hits and rookie Jay Bruce drove in a pair of runs for the Reds, who have won three in a row and are 13-8 since losing five straight from June 14-19.

Cincinnati last swept a series in Milwaukee from July 11-13, 2003.

Dunn, who has five homers in six games and eight in his last 13, has 26 home runs on the season to move into second in the NL behind Philadelphia's Ryan Howard (28).

"I am swinging at pitches I should be swinging at, seeing the ball pretty good and getting some good results," said Dunn, who has three homers in 13 at-bats at Miller Park this season, but is 4-for-20 with no home runs and seven strikeouts against Sabathia.

Homer Bailey (0-3, 8.76) was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to start Sunday for Cincinnati in place of Aaron Harang, who is likely headed to the disabled list with stiffness in the his right forearm.

The highly touted prospect struggled in three June starts for the Reds, giving up six homers in 12 1-3 innings during that span. He was 4-7 with a 4.42 ERA in 16 starts for Louisville.

"I've been throwing a lot better," Bailey told the Reds' official Web site. "I'm cutting down on walks, (getting) more strikeouts and feeling better about the way I'm throwing."

The right-hander, who went 4-2 with a 5.76 ERA in nine starts for Cincinnati last season, makes his first appearance against Milwaukee on Sunday.

On Saturday, Prince Fielder's two-run home run in the fourth inning provided all the offense for Milwaukee, which has lost four of its last six and is six games back of first-place Chicago in the NL Central.

Fielder is batting .314 (11-for-35) in his last nine games, but is 3-for-27 with six strikeouts against Cincinnati in 2008.
