Opening Day lineup starting to take shape

Opening Day lineup starting to take shape
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The lineup/batting order suspiciously resembled the one Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker probably will be scribbling on his Opening Day lineup card.

There was one exception, for sure, and perhaps two.

The lineup (which was annihilated 8-1 by the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, March 17, in Bright House Field):

CF Willy Taveras, LF Chris Dickerson, 1B Joey Votto, 2B Brandon Phillips, RF Jay Bruce, 3B Edwin Encarnacion, SS Alex Gonzalez, C Ryan Hanigan, P Aaron Harang.

The lineup produced no runs and four hits, striking out seven times against Brett Myers in 5 2 / 3 innings, while Harang was mutilated for six runs and seven hits (five doubles) in 3 1 / 3 innings.

"I never got in a groove," said Harang. "I didn't feel comfortable. I didn't have a finishing pitch. The good pitches I threw down and away, they were taking to right field. I didn't feel sharp or have command."

The for-sure difference in the lineup will be that catcher Ramon Hernandez will start instead of Hanigan, but Hernandez is with the Venezuelan World Baseball Classic team.

Hanigan had one of the four hits off Myers.

And with left-hander Johan Santana scheduled to pitch Opening Day for the New York Mets, Jerry Hairston Jr. could start in left in place of Dickerson.

Hairston is with the Mexican WBC team.

Baker talked with depth about the makeup of his batting order.

"I like Gonzalez in the seventh spot and Hernandez in the eighth spot," he said. "Preferably, I'd like Gonzalez in the second spot, unless Hairston is playing. Then I like him second.

"That second spot is a very intelligent and unselfish spot to hit in," Baker added. "Dickerson might be a little young to do it on a daily basis, and we're trying to teach him how to do it. You know, when to take, when to run.

"The average may not indicate it, but the No. 2 guys is the guy who gets runners over, takes pitches for Taveras to steal, things like that."

So why was Dickerson second and Gonzalez seventh Tuesday?

"I want to make sure (Gonzalez's) leg (left knee) is right before I put him No. 2, because he is going to be running first to home, first to third. With Joey (Votto) and (Jay) Bruce hitting behind him, that could be a lot of running - hopefully in that second spot there will be a lot of running around the bases."

Baker said he also wants somebody solid to hit seventh, "Behind Encarnacion, because Edwin can get hot or cold, so I need somebody to pick him up when he is cold.

"And Hernandez fits the eight-hole because he is a good two-out breaking-ball hitter," Baker added.
