McCutchen turned in a quality start and also slapped an RBI single in his first at-bat, but he wound up with a no-decision. Darnell McDonald scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Cincinnati Reds past the Pirates , 4-3.
McCutchen was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to start the first game of a day-night doubleheader. He worked six innings, allowed three runs and five hits, walked two and struck out five.
Only a few thousand fans were at Great American Ballpark for the 1:10 p.m. game, which was a makeup of an April 10 rainout.
"I felt a little antsy," McCutchen said. "I tried to block out that crowd and get after it."
McCutchen paused and grinned.
"That's a joke," he said.
The small crowd included about 20 of McCutchen's friends and family, most of whom made a 20-hour drive from Oklahoma.
"I tried not to look up too much," McCutchen said. "But I heard them a few times."
Drew Stubbs launched McCutchen's second pitch of the game over the left field wall, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead.
"After giving up a home run like that, a lot of guys might lose control in that situation," catcher Jason Jaramillo said. "But he settled down right after that. He did a great job."
The Pirates took a 2-1 lead in the second against righty Kip Wells. With two outs, Lastings Milledge walked, Ronny Cedeno was hit by a pitch and Jaramillo punched an RBI single to left.
On an 0-2 pitch, McCutchen lofted a run-scoring single over the head of first baseman Joey Votto.
"I had two bunt hits at Indy, but that's my first real hit since 2001," McCutchen said. "I was pretty shocked. I remember telling myself to relax my shoulders at 0-2. The next thing I knew, I was sitting on first. I don't know what happened in between."
The Reds regained the lead in the third. In the seventh, the Pirates tied it when Cedeno tripled and scored on Jaramillo's single.
McDonald and Craig Tatum hit back-to-back singles off Jesse Chavez (0-4) with one out in the ninth. McDonald went to third on a fly ball and scored the game-winning run when a slider bounced away from Jaramillo.
