--The Reds bolstered their bullpen by promoting LHP Pedro Viola from Class AAA Louisville. To make room for Viola on their 40-man roster, the Reds transferred IF Danny Richar from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day list. Richar is recovering from surgery in July to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Viola was 2-2 with a 5.47 ERA and eight saves in 11 opportunities with Louisville. He led Louisville with 54 relief appearances.
--3B Scott Rolen, despite hitting .368 during a five-game hitting streak, was out of the starting lineup Wednesday. He went hitless in one at-bat after entering in a double switch. --RHP Homer Bailey's career-high streak of consecutive scoreless innings was snapped at 11 when Pittsburgh's Garrett Jones led off the second inning with a home run Wednesday.
MEDICAL WATCH:
C Ramon Hernandez (sore left knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 17. He had surgery July 21, and he hopes to return in mid-September.
RF Jay Bruce (fractured right wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list July 12. He took batting practice Sept. 1, and he might begin a rehab assignment during Labor Day weekend.
RHP Johnny Cueto (inflamed right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 20. He was activated and started the second game of a doubleheader Aug. 31.
OF Laynce Nix (stiff neck) went on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 31.
OF Chris Dickerson (sprained left ankle) went on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 24.
C Ryan Hanigan (concussion) went on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 24.
RHP Aaron Harang (appendectomy) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Aug. 21. He had emergency surgery to remove his appendix on Aug. 22 and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
CF Willy Taveras (right quadriceps strain) went on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 19.
INF Danny Richar (torn labrum in left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list July 3, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sept. 2. He had season-ending surgery July 28.
RHP Edinson Volquez (right elbow tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list June 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on Aug. 25. He suffered more pain a simulated game July 31, and he underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on Aug. 3.
RHP Mike Lincoln (bulging neck disk) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 13. He had season-ending disk-replacement surgery July 20.
UT Wilkin Castillo (torn labrum in right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 21. He had season-ending surgery July 1 and was moved to the 60-day disabled list July 3.
