--RHP Edinson Volquez (4-2, 4.40) makes only his second career start against the Padres Saturday. He is 0-0 with a 1.17 ERA for two appearances against the Padres, one start and one relief appearance and in that start last year in Petco he held the Padres to one run and two hits over six innings with 12 strikeouts, but was victimized by a blown save.
--RHP Francisco Cordero, tied for the NL lead with 10 saves (none blown) is one save behind Sparky Lyle (222) on the all-time list. --CF Willy Taveras' 14-game hitting streak ended Friday in San Diego with an 0-for-4 after he had more than one hit in six of those games. He had 24 hits and was batting .407 during the streak, lifting his season's average to .322.
--3B Jerry Hairston Jr., moved from shortstop to third base to make room for SS Alex Gonzalez, went 0-for-4 Friday. It ended his nine-game hitting streak.
--LF Laynce Nix has only 59 at-bats but leads the club with nine doubles. He has taken over left field against right-handed pitchers from OF Chris Dickerson.
MEDICAL WATCH:
1B Joey Votto (flu) did not start May 7-10, but he was back in the lineup May 11. He left the May 12 game because of dizziness and did not play May 13. He is expected to return May 15.
SS Alex Gonzalez (strained left oblique) left the May 4 game and did not play May 5-13. He is expected to start May 15.
3B Edwin Encarnacion (chip fracture in left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list April 28. He might miss two to three weeks.
