--RHP Micah Owings snapped a personal nine-game losing streak with a win in his last start on April 26 against Atlanta. He'll try to pick up his second win of the season and the second win of his career at Great American Ball Park in Thursday's finale of the brief two-game series with Milwaukee. Owings is 0-3 in four career appearances (one start) against the Brewers.
--SS Alex Gonzalez is recovering rapidly from a left oblique strain, so he might avoid going on the disabled list. Gonzalez left Monday's game at Florida with the injury, but team physicians didn't even bother with an MRI, manager Dusty Baker said before Wednesday's game. Baker hopes to make a decision on Gonzalez's status before first-place St. Louis reaches town Friday for a three-game series. --SS Paul Janish pitched the ninth inning Wednesday, becoming the first position player to pitch for the Reds since Lenny Harris at San Francisco on June 1, 1998. Janish struck out leadoff batter J.J. Hardy and hit 92 mph on the ballpark radar.
MEDICAL WATCH:
SS Alex Gonzalez (strained left oblique) left the May 4 game and did not play May 5-6. He probably won't return before May 8.
3B Edwin Encarnacion (chip fracture in left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list April 28. He might miss two to three weeks.
