--CF Willy Taveras, signed as a free agent in December to lead off, missed his second start Wednesday because of a lingering flu bug. Jerry Hairston Jr., the Opening Day starter in left field, started Wednesday in center field. Taveras tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.
Hairston, who missed 44 games while making three trips to the disabled list last season, left Wednesday's game after five innings because of what was announced as a tight left lower leg, presumably suffered when he fouled a ball off of his leg while striking out in the fourth inning.
--Chris Dickerson, Wednesday's starter in left field, led the Reds with 62 at-bats, 20 hits and six stolen bases and tied Jay Bruce for the team lead with 29 total bases in spring training.
--RHP Bronson Arroyo will learn in Thursday's start whether the cortisone shot he received for carpal tunnel syndrome was truly effective.
