--SS Paul Janish, who was a closer in high school but hadn't pitched since, was pressed into pitching duty Wednesday against the Brewers when the Reds trailed 10-3 in the ninth. He gave up five runs, including a three-run homer to 1B Prince Fielder.
--LHP Matt Maloney, awaiting his chance with the Reds, was Class AAA Louisville's Pitcher of the Month with a 2-0 record and a 1.86 ERA over 19 1/3 innings during which he walked none and struck out 15. The Reds do not have a left-hander in their rotation. --INF/OF Jerry Hairston on Tuesday made his first start at shortstop this year with Alex Gonzalez injured. It was the fifth position at which he has started (third base, second base, left field, center field, short). "Shortstop is my favorite and I love it," he said.
