--INF Paul Janish suddenly became the team's emergency pitcher and its backup catcher in case of a major blowout. Manager Dusty Baker discovered that Janish was a shortstop/closer in high school and that he was an emergency catcher at Rice University. Janish said: "I become more and more versatile every day."

--LHP Bill Bray had two separate injuries during spring training that limited his innings and forced the club to start him at Class AAA Louisville. In the first week in the minors, he suffered a strained left elbow and is on the 10-day DL, but is in Cincinnati for treatment and evaluation.

--2B Brandon Phillips and 3B Edwin Encarnacion are drawing more walks than at any time in their careers, nine for Phillips and 10 for Encarnacion in 11 games. But it isn't helping their averages because Phillips is batting .176 and Encarnacion .156.

BY THE NUMBERS: 9 -- Times in their first 11 games that the Reds have been behind. They won four of those games.
