--OF Corey Patterson, in an 0-for-19 slump and hitting .200 for the season, was optioned to Class AAA Louisville. He had lost playing time with the arrival of CF Jay Bruce from Louisville.
--INF Andy Phillips' contract was purchased from Class AAA Louisville, where he hit .315 with five homers and 27 RBIs while playing first base, third base and second base. Phillips, who played parts of the past four seasons for the Yankees, will serve as a right-handed pinch hitter and utility player. --SS Alex Gonzalez, on the 15-day disabled list since the season began after suffering a compression fracture of his left knee early in spring training, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. The timetable for his return remains uncertain, although he is taking infield practice with a brace on the knee.
--RHP Aaron Harang, who pitched four innings in relief Sunday and struck out nine during an 18-inning loss to the Padres, was moved back for an extra day of rest and will face the Pirates on Thursday in Great American Ball Park.
