--RHP Johnny Cueto will be hard-pressed to match last year's debut when he makes his first start of the season Friday against Pittsburgh. Last season against Arizona, Cueto became the first pitcher since 1900 to debut with as many as 10 strikeouts and no walks. He tossed seven innings of one-run ball in a 3-2 Cincinnati win. Cueto was only the third pitcher to win his first career start while allowing just one hit and logging at least 10 strikeouts.
--Non-roster OF Jonny Gomes, reassigned to Class AAA Louisville in perhaps the most surprising of the Reds' last moves on Sunday, accepted the assignment on Wednesday. Gomes was expected to make the team based on his major league experience and a solid spring performance, which included 12 RBIs -- tied for second on the team -- and a team-leading four home runs. --Manager Dusty Baker, in his third managerial job, entered the season 34th on the all-time wins list at 1,236, three behind Bill Rigney for 33rd.
