Another pitcher joined the Reds on Tuesday when Jared Burton returned from the disabled list, where he resided since the week before the All-Star break with a sore lat muscle.
He pitched an inning Thursday and an inning Saturday on a rehab assignment with Class AAA Louisville and was back in the Reds' clubhouse Sunday, ready to pitch. "My command was better Saturday than Thursday, but there was some rust Thursday," Burton said. On Saturday he walked one, but gave up no hits or runs. "It has been a long time, and I'm anxious to get back and finish strong. I was having a good season and I've worked hard; now I want to get the rewards of that hard work the last month."
Said manager Dusty Baker, "Jared was having a great year, almost an All-Star year, really." Burton is 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA in 43 appearances, mostly in a setup role.
PIRATES 3, REDS 2: Aaron Harang gave up back-to-back home runs in the second inning to Brandon Moss and Andy LaRoche, and that was enough to hand him his 15th defeat against only four wins. Chris Dickerson led off the first with a home run for the Reds, his fifth homer in 18 games since his recall from Class AAA Louisville. The loss stopped the Reds' three-game winning streak and ended Pittsburgh's 10-game losing streak.
