The Reds lost a starting pitcher and his probable replacement on the same day.
Johnny Cueto, who left Sunday's start after three innings, was diagnosed Monday by team physician Dr. Tim Kremchek with a posterior strain on his right elbow, possibly because of hyperextension. Cueto won't make his scheduled Saturday start at home against the Giants, and Dr. Kremchek will check him out again Friday. Most likely, the team will shut down the 22-year-old rookie after he threw 155 innings this season.
His likely replacement would have been right-hander Homer Bailey, but Bailey was in Cincinnati on Monday also seeing Dr. Kremchek and was diagnosed with a mild sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
Bailey won't take his Thursday start for Class AAA Louisville and will be re-checked by Kremchek at the end of the week and also will most likely be shut down for the season. Bailey has not won a game in 21 starts at Louisville and Cincinnati, winless since April 27.
