As expected, shortstop Alex Gonzalez was back in the lineup Friday, his first appearance since pulling a muscle in his left side May 4.
To make room, manager Dusty Baker did some lineup shuffling and said, "We have to get Gonzalez going sometime ... he is my shortstop." Gonzalez was hitting .176. Jerry Hairston Jr. filled in at shortstop in Gonzalez's absence and was moved to third base Friday, taking a nine-game hitting streak into the game during which he hit .405 with 14 runs scored.
Left out of the lineup was third baseman Adam Rosales, who had a six?game hitting streak during which he hit .391.
Baker said Rosales will be back in the lineup quickly. He planned to play him at first base Friday if Joey Votto couldn't play after missing the last 1 1/2 games with dizziness, but Votto was able to play.
PADRES 5, REDS 3: Starter Aaron Harang and relief pitchers Arthur Rhodes and David Weathers combined to give up three runs in the seventh inning, turning a 3-2 lead into a 5-3 loss. 1B Joey Votto homered in the sixth to give the Reds a 3-1 lead, but they didn't score again.
