Third baseman Adam Rosales is struggling on defense, having difficulty stopping hard-hit balls and trouble cleanly fielding routine grounders.

It's the main he reason he didn't make the team out of spring training and was sent to Class AAA Louisville.

He made only one error Monday in the opener of a three-game series against the Diamondbacks but could have been charged with three.

"Those are definitely playable balls, plays I should make," he said. "I need to make them. It's a matter of slowing things down. I'm pretty tense, and I need to trust my hands."

There has been nothing wrong with Rosales' offense since he was called up from Louisville on April 28 -- .298, two homers, five RBIs.

"I know I will play good defense, but I'm kind of hyped up, in case people can't tell," he added. "I have to be patient. What's frustrating is that pitching and defense is so important, and that's why I'm putting too much pressure on myself.

REDS 3, DIAMONDBACKS 1: Micah Owings pitched against his former teammates for the first time and held them to one run and four hits over seven-plus innings. Brandon Phillips drove in two runs with a run-scoring single and a 452-foot home run.
