The suspicion was that third baseman Edwin Encarnacion might be hurt. He missed time during spring training with a sore shoulder and a sore wrist, which might explain his .127 batting average.
It was confirmed Tuesday when X-rays revealed a chip fracture in his left wrist and he was placed on the disabled list, the first roster move the Reds have made since the end of spring training. To take his place, the club recalled infielder Adam Rosales from Class AAA Louisville, where he was hitting .431 with an 11-game hitting streak. Rosales had been on base in all 17 games played by the Bats.
"We don't know if he did it on his last swing Monday or earlier," manager Dusty Baker said of Encarnacion's injury. "I did see him wince on his last swing of the night (a strikeout in the ninth inning)."
Rosales had two hits and two RBIs for Louisville against Indianapolis on Tuesday afternoon. Later in the day, he arrived in Cincinnati in the top of the first for a game against Houston and was ready for duty, although he didn't see any action.
ASTROS 8, REDS 3: The Reds lost to LHP Wandy Rodriguez for the second time in 10 days, his only two wins this season, with Cincinnati scoring one run in 14 innings off him. RHP Aaron Harang (2-3) gave up six runs (five earned) and six hits in only five innings, and the Reds defense made three errors.
