Shortstop Alex Gonzalez, 0-for-16 to start the season, and catcher Ramon Hernandez, hitting .105, used Tuesday as a work day that didn't include playing a game.

Both players arrived early at Miller Park and took extended extra hitting to do what they could to shed slow starts.

In their places, manager Dusty Baker started catcher Ryan Hanigan and shortstop Paul Janish. Gonzalez and Hernandez are expected to start the series finale Wednesday in Milwaukee.

Gonzalez said he believes he ironed out the wrinkles in his batting practice session, that he was opening his hips too fast, making it impossible to reach pitches from the middle of the plate to the outside.

"I'm not worried," he said. "It's just the start of the season. If it was in August or September, then I might be worried. I just need to keep my hips closed and stay back on pitches and I'll be OK."

REDS 6, BREWERS 1: RHP Bronson Arroyo gave up one run and four hits over 6 1/3 innings for his second victory in two starts. LF Jerry Hairston Jr. walked and scored a run in the first inning, then crashed a two-run home run in the third. The Reds wrapped it up with three runs in the ninth.
