There are some who thought Milwaukee Prince Fielder took a cheap shot at Ryan Hanigan on Saturday.
Fielder was on second base when the Brewers knocked was a base hit to shallow center. Fielder tried to score and Hanigan had the ball waiting for him. Fielder veered inside the base line and threw an elbow toward Hanigan, but Hanigan tagged him out. Was it a dirty play? Not according to Reds manager Dusty Baker.
"Not even close," said Baker. "That wasn't dirty baseball. That's the way you are supposed to do it. That's the same thing I would have done. He was trying to knock the ball out of Hanigan's glove.
"That's when baseball becomes football," Baker added. "You try to knock the ball loose. Too many guys these days give themselves up, just stop and let themselves be tagged out. Do you think Pete Rose would do that? Not ever.
"I don't understand people nowadays who think the game shouldn't be played hard," Baker added. "Fielder did it right. You know what I noticed and liked about that play? Hanigan made the tag and then moved out of the way and pulled his glove away without dropping the ball."
REDS 7, MARLINS 5: The Reds spotted the Marlins a four-run lead, then scored six in the seventh inning. Rookie Joey Votto scored the team's first run with his 22nd home run in the sixth, then added a two-run double in the six-run seventh in a one-game series that was a makeup game from a May 15 rainout.
