As always, Dusty Baker's office smelled fruity and flowery from the candles he keeps lit, but on Sunday morning it smelled that way with no candles lit.
Maybe it was the smell of recent success -- six wins in seven games and nine victories in their last 12 games. "This winning really helps things at the end of the season," Baker said. "It helps a lot, helps everybody out. There is no substitute for winning. Nothing."
And what makes it sweeter is the fact Baker seldom uses the same lineup or batting order twice.
"The good thing is we're winning with different guys, different lineups," he said. "Hey, at this time of year, you have to see things. I hate to see Brandon Phillips hurt, but it has opened up the opportunity for us to see different guys."
BREWERS 8, REDS 1: RHP Bronson Arroyo gave up six runs (five earned) and six hits over six innings, enough to hand him his first defeat in seven starts. He had won five of his last six starts, a stretch included a blown save. The Reds were held to five hits by six Brewers pitchers.
