Manager Dusty Baker and pitching coach Dick Pole considered permitting left-hander Adam Pettyjohn to make his Cincinnati starting debut this weekend against the Brewers.

Pettyjohn was not on the team's 40-man roster earlier this season, but when he went 15-6 with a 4.59 ERA for Class AAA Louisville, leading the International League in wins, the Reds rewarded him by including him among the September call-ups.

Pettyjohn pitched in relief last weekend in Arizona, his first major league appearance since 2001, "And we'd like to get him a start," Baker said.

After considering a start against Milwaukee, Baker and Pole decided to hold back because the Brewers are still in contention.

Instead, the Reds will pitch two other rookies who have more experience this year, Ramon Ramirez on Friday and Johnny Cueto on Saturday, giving Cueto an extra day of rest after he threw 115 pitches in five innings Sunday in Arizona.

REDS 7, CARDINALS 2: 3B Edwin Encarnacion's three-run double in the sixth inning turned a one-run deficit into a two-run lead, and the Reds built on it from there to help RHP Bronson Arroyo gain his 15th victory, 11th in his last 14 decisions.
