Unless they don't lose again this season -- not likely with 13 games left -- the Reds will finish the season below .500. One more loss will give them 82 for the year, assuring the team of its eighth consecutive losing season.
The closest the Reds came to a .500 season in that span was in 2006, when they went 80-82. They have not finished at or above .500 since 2000, when they were 85-77. For all the losing in the last eight years, the Reds once again are rebuilding. They traded away Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn during the season, a sure sign that they are starting over.
Tuesday night, the Reds begin the final home stand of yet another disappointing season. They will host a St. Louis team desperate for wins as it tries to salvage fading playoff hopes.
The Tuesday and Thursday games against the Cards will be noteworthy for the Reds only because they will mark the final home starts of the season for Bronson Arroyo (14-10) and Edinson Volquez (16-5).
