Five starts ago, Edinson Volquez owned 15 victories and seemed well on his way to 20 victories. But he has fallen on hard times.
Volquez, acquired in the offseason from the Rangers in the Josh Hamilton deal, was the Reds' only All-Star this year. Volquez has won only once in his last four starts, leaving him with 16 victories. If he wins 20, he would be the first Reds pitcher to reach that level since 1988, when lefty Danny Jackson went 23-8.
If everything breaks right, Volquez will have four more starts, including the last game of the season in St. Louis. He needs victories in all four to reach 20.
"I'm not thinking that much about it and haven't all year," Volquez said. "It is my first full season in the majors, and if I can win 17 or 18, I'll be satisfied and very happy with what I've accomplished."
