Todd Coffey, an integral part of the Reds' bullpen for two years, was designated for assignment Tuesday.

After leading the Reds in 2006 with 81 appearances and finishing with a 3.58 ERA, Coffey received a two-year contract. But the last two seasons haven't gone nearly as well.

In 58 appearances in 2007, he posted a 5.82 ERA, then followed that up with a 6.05 ERA in 17 big-league games this season and spent most of the year at Class AAA Louisville.

Coffey has 10 days to clear waivers or be traded. If he clears, he can remain in the Reds' organization.

"Hopefully he will clear," general manager Walt Jocketty said. "We needed the roster spot so we can take a look at other players."

REDS 5, BREWERS 4 (11 innings): 2B Brandon Phillips, 0-for-4 at the time, watched the Brewers intentionally walk 1B Joey Votto in front of him, then delivered a run-scoring single, driving in the winning run -- and he did it with a broken finger, apparently suffered moments earlier on a bunt attempt. 3B Edwin Encarnacion and RF Jay Bruce hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth to give rookie RHP Ramon Ramirez a 4-1 lead, but RHP Jared Burton gave up a game-tying three-run home run to Ray Durham in the seventh.
